7 Reasons Why Your Acne Isn't Going Away

Updated: Jun 23, 2022

Acne is THE most common skin condition that Dermatologists see and treat at DermCafé.

❗ Remember that what works for one person's acne may not necessarily work for you. Many factors determine the outcome beyond the treatment itself - genetics, underlying medical conditions, type and severity of acne, lifestyle, stress levels, environmental factors (weather, humidity), and others.

👩‍⚕️If your acne isn’t going away or is worsening, please see a Board Certified Dermatologist to receive evidence-based, safe and effective treatment. 👨‍⚕️

#1 You’re missing the right active ingredients

Actives with the most clinical proof:

✔️Topical retinoids

✔️Benzoyl peroxide

✔️Topical antibiotics

✔️Hydroxy acids

✔️Combination treatments work better and safer than singular therapy

❌ Niacinamide, silymarin, bakuchiol, aloe vera, etc have limited evidence

#2 You’re overdoing it

❌ More ingredients/products don’t necessarily mean better results.

❌ Irritating treatments can disrupt the skin barrier and worsen acne.

✔️Gentle cleansers and moisturizers are essential in acne treatment!

#3 You’re focusing only on Lifestyle Changes

Lifestyle changes can help, but only go so far!

✔️Remove make-up & sunscreen

✔️Shower immediately after over-sweating

✔️Manage your stress, eat regularly & sleep well

❌ There’s limited evidence that diet significantly affects acne

#4 More patience may be needed

It often takes 2-3 months of consistent therapy before results are seen. Additionally, some treatments can initially flare acne. Acne can be worse in some individuals despite using the same regimen. Everyone’s journey is unique!

#5 It actually went away, and now it’s back

It’s normal for acne to recur! While some outgrow their acne, others can have acne that persists into their 50s. Maintenance treatment is often needed

#6 It’s mostly the acne complications that remain

Scarring, post-acne redness or discolouration are very common. They can be harder to improve than the acne itself. Improvement requires targeted skincare, medications and/or procedural treatments. Speak to a Board-Certified Dermatologist!

#7 You need to see a Board-Certified Dermatologist

Optimal treatment requires a tailored plan where all factors are assessed by a Dermatologist

Most acne responds well to prescription medications
